Okavango Delta
By a lucky twist of the continent’s tectonic plates, the Okavango River, which takes a nine-month journey from Angola in a quest to reach the sea, ends up in a vast pan of Kalahari Desert instead. Here the river fans out into a maze of palm-fringed islands and fingering waterways that covers 15,000 sq. km at its peak – which, and herein lies the twist, occurs in the driest time of year.
In the winter months, the Okavango is gridlocked with wildlife as the animals travel great distances to sup the cool clear waters of the delta. Not that they’ve got much choice as there’s nary a drop for miles around in the dry season.
Your game drive vehicle often takes the form of a large tree hollowed out and equipped with a long pole, the end of which is attached to a guide who will heave you through the swampy waterworks while keeping up a steady banter.
Aside from the splendour of the world’s largest inland delta, the game viewing is spectacular with a combination of many rare and elusive creatures and high concentrations of the common tarts. Wild dog, cheetah, leopard, red lechwe are among the lucky finds if you get bored of daily close-ups of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, lion, hyena, jackal and the full complement of antelope.
The generous river plays host to a paradise of birds including such rarities as pel's fishing owl, African skimmer, white-backed night heron, bat hawk, wood owl, narina trogon, carmine Bee-eater and many hundreds of aquatic and riparian species.
At Out2Africa we would love nothing better than to send you on the safari holiday of a lifetime so simply contact Out2Africa to book your special tailormade itinerary, companions not included but welcome!
