Sandibe Safari Lodge is a beautiful camp on a permanent channel in the Okavango Delta. Situated in a 27,000-ha private reserve that encompasses six broad habitats, the water and wilderness experience is excellent.
Shaded by a dense canopy of palm trees, the eight bungalows are African-inspired havens of luxury and seclusion. Screened windows, deep thatch, en suite bathrooms and private viewing decks keep the African wilderness in view but in check.
The living area has a soaring thatched roof and an open-air boma for fire-lit dinners beneath the stars. The lodge has a pool in the forest, a well-stocked gift shop and an even better-stocked charcoal-cooled wine cellar.
Activities include water safaris in traditional mekoro and special delta boats; morning and evening game drives in sturdy open vehicles; bird watching and fascinating guided walking safaris.
The game viewing and birding opportunities are exceptional: large prides of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, hyena; huge herds of elephant and buffalo; hippo; plains game, including tsessebe, sable and roan; and the rare red lechwe and sitatunga.
With 350 species recorded in the concession, birding is going to be exceptional. Specials include Pel’s fishing owl, slaty egret, lesser jacana, wattled crane, coppery-tailed coucal, Hartlaub’s babbler, greater swamp warbler, chirping cisticola, swamp boubou and brown firefinch.
