Camps Bay and Clifton
Cape Town’s trademark beaches are vaingloriously dubbed the Platinum Mile by the fiercely protective look-but-don’t-touch masses who like to call this stretch of scooter-set paradise their own.
Clifton is a series of four beaches, heroically named one through four, that are sheltered from the southeaster by Lion’s Head and from marauding mobs by the steep climb and frigid water. Third beach is tacitly reserved for gay men in snug beachwear intent on self-transformation from human to bronze statue, many of whom you’d gladly display on your mantelpiece. One, two and four, are by no means shy of the ogle-factor provided you’re into board-shorted jocks hurling Frisbees at each other.
Camps Bay is more accessible and full of people trying their damndest to look like celebrities in disguise: enormous glasses and ridiculous hats that shout, ‘LOOK AT ME!’ It’s a fabulous inside-out place where beauty has an SPF rating and the cafés fill up from the sidewalk in. The beach is long, wide and far less discerning; usually there’s a photo shoot happening to the incessant beat of bat and ball.
The Atlantic seaboard – the realtor’s word of choice – from Bantry Bay to Llandudno feels like a Mediterranean island and you can’t help but snap into holiday mode the instant you arrive. In case you need another plus, it’s just down the drag from Green Point and De Waterkant; the City Bowl is a scenic drive up and over the mountain and the V&A Waterfront is a short cruise past Sea Point promenade.
