Welgelegen
Gardens, City Bowl, Cape Town
- Lovingly restored Victorian building in a quiet location
- Small and intimate with personal owner-manager attention
- Relaxing and homely with plenty of return visitors on their books
Meaning ‘well-located’, Welgelegen Guest House is an intimate and luxurious turn-of-the-century building in the heights of Cape Town and a perfect base from which to explore the city’s attractions.
The house has been given a loving makeover by owner-manager, Lanie who managed to complement the original architecture with modern style. Neutral earthy colours pick out one or two splashes of bright dominant colour to create a feeling of quiet elegance.
Rooms have been given a sweep with the uncluttered brush and offer comfortable simplicity with individual charm. Across the road is the equally elegant Grace Cottage with two double en suite rooms and full use of the main house facilities.
The guest house is actually two houses joined by a courtyard with landscaped garden and a water feature that doubles as a pool where breakfast is served al fresco – weather permitting. In inclement weather, you can breakfast in the dining room with its exposed brick, polished concrete floors and ceiling-high glass doors opening onto the courtyard.
Dinners are not catered for at Welgelegen and with so many of South Africa’s finest restaurants beckoning, who would dare compete? Helpful advice on activities is always on offer be it a night out, wine tasting or a day at the beach.
