Cape Heritage Hotel

Heritage Square, City Bowl, Cape Town

  • Charm and sophistication in the centre of a historic square
  • Amidst a maze of restaurants, cafes and bars
  • Owner-managed ensuring personal service and attention to detail

Heritage Square was wickedly tagged for demolition to make way for – get this – a car park and ring road. Fortunately, fate or common sense prevailed – a fact that most locals probably take for granted when they’re feasting at one of the fine restaurants or schmoodling in the ultra cool bars that share the square with boutiques, a hairdresser and the Cape Heritage Hotel.

The square’s past did not escape owner-manager Nick Garston who has lapped up every last bit of history and preserved the 1780s hotel that used to share the square with mongers, smiths, swains and all kinds of trades in days of old.

The 15 individually decorated rooms have retained much of the original finishing, including the Cape Yellowwood flooring, sash windows, teak ceilings and original plasterwork.

The old world charm has been beefed up with modern amenities and complemented by traditional styles of decoration; facilities and services match those of any first-rate hotel including in-room entertainment, climate control and complimentary drinks in one of two season-specific lounges.

Breakfast is served in the centrepiece of the hotel - the cobbled courtyard, which is sheltered by South Africa’s oldest living grapevine (allegedly) and bounded by a variety of quality restaurants, which would complete the filmset for a period piece if it weren’t for their polished stone, steel and modern lighting.
