Sea Point
Home to many gays and visited by more, this sausage-shaped section of Cape Town, around the corner from De Waterkant, has had a dappled past as its quirks and contrasts will bear witness.
After the runaway success of the V & A Waterfront, many of the restaurants, bars and clubs that made Sea Point famous fell on hard times; property prices fell, gangsters, brothels and pawn shops moved in and the glamorous side of Sea Point was all but elbowed out.
Now in the thick of a feverish property boom, Sea Point has been rediscovered and people are falling over themselves to get back into this prime chunk of kelp-scented seafront. The result is a vigorous mix of honking taxis, Mediterranean delis and posh private clubs scattered among thickset blocks, grand old homes and spanking new condos.
Sandwiched between Signal Hill and the tempestuous Atlantic, Sea Point is carved up by three main roads that run from the City Bowl to the beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. The middle vein is lined with every conceivable form of industry from food to cars via furniture and the upper is given over to fancy houses overlooking Table Bay. The third artery runs along the seafront towards the Waterfront with a long park-lined promenade.
