While many large hotels try to atone for their size by brandishing the word personal at every possible opportunity, few succeed. Thankfully there are exceptions to this rule and one such place is The Winchester, which does justice to the word and all its permutations with four-star facilities and service so personal it borders on the unprofessional.
Decor matches the elegant building with lashings of floral and stripes and colours and antique pieces and you get the picture; rooms vary in size and luxury starting from bog standard to luxurious suite and you have a choice of classic – read floral and pink – or contemporary – read paired down minimalism destined to become classic.
The hotel’s colonnaded piazza is a refreshing escape and a fine place to savour a romantic evening under the stars and Harvey’s at the Mansions is a popular restaurant in its own right – as the many locals in attendance will testify in chorus, with three part harmony to the accompaniment of a muted saxophone. Talking of sax, Sunday brunch features a live jazz band and a splendidly decadent way to start or end the week depending on which way you look at it.
The spa is not your average afterthought either; offering a complete range of wellness treatments from head to toe – literally – the Ginkgo Health and Wellness Spa, like the restaurant could survive on its own. What’s more Chefy can whip up a healthy meal that compliments your therapy and you can opt for an in-room session.
All the ingredients are there: great location, good food, comfortable rooms, a romantic piazza and friendly, helpful staff – or we could just say personal service.
