Franschhoek
Known to locals as the gastronomic capital of South Africa and to outsiders as the most coveted valley in the country, Franschhoek embodies its French heritage with high standards of winemaking, cooking, hospitality and withering elitism.
The picturesque village is a narrow stretch of immaculate restored Cape Dutch houses enclosed by craggy granite mountains that rise sheer into the sky like war-torn shark fins, and all around the mesmerising rhythm of row upon row of grape vines imposes itself like a conductor’s baton.
You can barely sneeze without spraying a five-star chef in the face and there are more restaurants than streetlights, most of them worthy of some lauded mention in a catalogue of finest establishments countrywide. And the 30 or so wine farms in the area include some of the country’s finest and you could easily exhaust your wine tasting allocation in this valley alone.
Having experienced a boom in property investment and with a picture-postcard setting, Franschhoek has blossomed into one of the Cape’s most visited attractions. Shops, boutiques, cafes and all manner of pampering self-indulgent industry have flocked here like egrets to a migrating herd of buffalo.
