La Residence

Franschhoek, Cape Winelands

  • Small, intimate and comfortable
  • Sumptuous suites with spectacular views of Franschhoek Valley
  • Mediterranean-inspired cooking with an emphasis on seasonal comfort

Len was a sought-after decorator and Johan has a history in art, interiors and jewellery. Small wonder then, that La Residence turned out to be an extravagant cross between a Tuscan villa, a French chateau and an African farmhouse.

Persian carpets and French antiques adorn the interior with exposed roof logs and a cloistered courtyard – with Tuscan arches - completing the eclectic montage. If the house doesn’t bowl you over, the setting might: on the edge of a private dam in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, surrounded by rolling vineyards and sheer mountains that look like stegosaurus skeletons.

Five lavish suites have been decorated with love and luxuriously fitted with sumptuous en suite bathrooms and private terraces. The double-volume living area is a rich contrast to the simple beauty framed by each massive window and the kitchen is part of your domain with an inviting log fire and comfy chairs to watch the chefs at work preparing your breakfast from local ingredients of the finest quality – organic, naturally.

Meals are generous, hearty and of the typical comfort food found in every good-living wine-producing region around the world. The menu is influenced by the seasons with hearty fireside tagines and soups in winter or al fresco grilled seafood and citrus salads in summer.

To occupy you between meals the hotel offers gentle country walks, fly-fishing, swimming, tennis, cheese tasting and private tastings at selected wine estates.
