Mont Rochelle Hotel
Franschhoek, Cape Winelands
- Refined and distinguished hotel
- Fine dining with wine, view and atmosphere to match
- In-house spa, sauna and gymnasium with plenty of outdoor pursuits to boot
Wanted: discerning traveller seeks luxurious lodgings in Franschhoek; no chancers please. Offered: luxurious lodgings in Franschhoek for the discerning traveller; no chancers please.
On the slopes of the Franschhoek Mountains, Mont Rochelle Hotel is a thatched manor house overlooking vineyards and the valley below. Decor is classic country with soft creams, delicate floral patterns and dark, rich wood and wicker furniture.
Rooms are individually decorated and range from after-thoughts with a view of the back garden and a hand-held shower to signature suites with sweeping valley views and a private terrace and plunge pool. All rooms have underfloor heating, air conditioning, hairdryers, safes, TV and complimentary tea and coffee.
Food and wine – we’re still in the unofficial Food and Wine Capital of South Africa, remember – are the main feature here, and Swiss chef Roger Clement brings classic styles to the table using simplicity to emphasise the finest of ingredients. The cigar lounge and wine bar is a decadent place to sit back in your deep wicker chair and enjoy the spectacular setting.
Activities abound both in the vicinity and a short complimentary shuttle away. The hotel can arrange wine tasting, fly fishing, hiking, horse trails, golf and more, while a less active approach would be to make full use of the in-house spa, sauna and, in preparation for the next gourmet evening, gymnasium.

Self-styled gastro capital of South Africa, the gentle Franschhoek Valley has nurtured a distinct French heritage and an oil baron’s price tag. |
