Franschhoek Inn
Franschhoek, Cape Winelands
- Quiet elegance in soothing sepia
- Massive wine cellar offering pre-dinner tastings and wine by the case
- Pool, terrace, courtyard, fresh air and spectacular views – it’s also a hotel
The Franschhoek Inn is a sedate and charming hotel in the sedate and charming village of Franschhoek. Overlooking vineyards and a dramatic mountainous backdrop, the hotel offers a comfortable and relaxing stay and is a rather splendid base camp.
Sepia and tungsten exude a comforting level of richness and the furniture is solid and probably as expensive as it looks. The 30 en suite rooms wear their sepia uniforms with distinctive panache but if the brown gets too much, you can always dip into the mini bar for a change of tone.
In the courtyard, and at the social centre of everything is the large and inviting pool onto which the rooms and restaurant open. The hotel’s restaurant is an elegant and sophisticated production and the vinothique is a proud feature offering locally produced wines by the case and regular tastings led by an experienced sommelier.
Hotel facilities and services include 24-hour reception, room service, covered parking, laundry and a luggage unpacking, and, better yet, packing service. Franschhoek has a profusion of gastronomic delights from delis and bistros to five-star restaurants of world renown. And if you need to give your taste buds – and your trousers – a break there is a long line-up of active country pursuits in the area that lend themselves admirably to the spectacular scenery – horse trails, golf, fly-fishing and wine routes to name four.
