Cathbert Country House
Franschhoek, Cape Winelands
- Country quiet in an oenophile’s utopia
- Genuine warmth and charm in an intimate owner-managed house
- Hearty country fare in a spectacular setting
Slap bang in the middle of the famous wine valleys – Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch – the Cathbert Country Inn is a welcome retreat and a comfortable base from which to explore the region.
Ann and Robert Morley will welcome you by your first name, your first pet’s name and your mother’s maiden name and their small, eight-roomed guest house is a warm and inviting, dare we say it, home from home ideally suited to languid forays into the winelands and beyond.
Decor is simple and honest making full use of indigenous wood furnishings and bright colours with soothing contrasts. The en suite rooms are large and suite-like with lounge areas and views across a dam, over some vineyards and up to the craggy peaks that cut up the skyline like a slumbering dragon. Cathbert is a place to put your feet up in front of your fire or flop down beside the pool on a lounger beneath a wide parasol and recover from your long day out.
Ann prepares all your meals with care using only the best local ingredients and you can vary your setting according to mood, weather or whim: al fresco on the garden deck, on the verandah or in the restaurant overlooking the pool. Dinner is a daily set menu with seasonal influences and a complement of the region’s excellent vintages.
Robert calmly lets Ann run the front of house and serenely leaves her to do the cooking while he samples the wine and provides a little local colour to the occasion – an excellent working relationship, don’t you agree?
