Paarl
In many ways overshadowed by the other two wine-producing valleys – Stellenbosch and Franschhoek – Paarl has retained much of its original charm and elegance without setting the stage for passing film crews and has developed a solid reputation for excellent wines and some pretty impressive restaurants and guest houses.
With over 30 wineries to choose from, many of them world-famous, your wine tour can easily start and end here, especially if you have a penchant for the Shiraz cultivar.
The town, South Africa’s third oldest European settlement, features a variety of architecture including Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco styles and the never-ending main street is lined with all manner of interesting shops, galleries, and eateries.
The Paarl Mountain – an enormous granite dome, called Tortoise Mountain by early inhabitants – dominates the skyline and the Berg River meanders through the vineyards to create your typical ho hum idyllic winelands setting.
The area is alive with active pursuits so pack a spare lung and a change of socks and prepare for a thorough going over by the invigorating cleanliness of the great outdoors.
