Bartholomeus Klip
Hermon, Cape Winelands
- Excellent food and wine in a sublime setting
- Five luxurious en suite rooms celebrating Victorian days gone by
- Game-viewing, nature walks, and fishing in the private reserve
Occupying an enormous private estate and comprising just five rooms on an all-inclusive basis, Bartholomeus Klip is an authentic taste of rural cape life without the toil that goes with it.
The sign says ‘hotel’ but, while the rooms, food, services and amenities are of the hotelier’s highest standards, any classification will leave out a big chunk of appealing attributes.
In addition to the 6,000 acres of rolling farmland, Bartholomeus Klip is a National Heritage Site for its role in nature conservation and has 10,000 acres of private reserve with rare plants and over 500 head of game - large antelope, wildebeest, leopard, lynx, fox and the very rare geometric tortoise. Top this with a large dam and tail it with spectacular mountain backdrops and suddenly the word ‘hotel’ sounds a bit tacky.
The en suite rooms are spacious and luxurious with lots of countrified touches of floral, wood and wicker; all, naturally, soak in the glorious surrounds while the suite offers the best of everything. There is a separate three-bedroom self-catering house and a cottage if you prefer total privacy but you’d be missing out on all the wonderful food.
The farm supplies much of the ingredients to the kitchen, which in turn supplies the table with sumptuous feasts only a country-fuelled appetite could appreciate. Brunch on the deck of the boat house; high tea on the large verandah and dine in style in the main house.
Active and non-active pursuits abound, both on the farm and in the nearby winelands and, if you’re in the money, Cape Town is a quick and rather spectacular helicopter flip away.

While not a wine farm and out of the magic triangle, Bartholomeus Klip is a short and scenic drive from Paarl and there are many wine farms in the area. |
 |

Rolling hills, stoic plain herds, a placid lake and shimmering mountain peaks make Bartholomeus Klip a centuries-old preservation of the Cape’s interior. |
