Stellenbosch
As the second oldest European settlement in the country, Stellenbosch is steeped in history and a multitude of faithfully preserved architectural styles that lend themselves to the air of age-old charm that pervades.
Foremost among many attributes is the wine industry, whose epicentre lies firmly in the Stellenbosch area by volume and quality. With over 100 wineries spread through the valley like a patchwork quilt, you’ll need some judicious reading to decide on which estates to visit.
The gnarled and folded mountains that surround the valley are a constant reminder of the immediacy of nature and the vineyards lay a splendid welcome mat for the spectacular nature reserves and trails that surround the area.
The town itself has plenty of attraction and charm to keep you occupied between forays into the winelands and many fine restaurants, cafes and boutique shops ply their trade to locals and the thousands of international visitors that flock to this beautiful area.
