Lanzerac Manor
Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands
- Five-star hotel in a classic Cape Dutch manor
- Haute cuisine and a wine list to match
- On the outskirts of Stellenbosch in an acclaimed wine farm
Lanzerac Manor & Winery is easily the most regal of places to stay in Stellenbosch. Occupying a 300-year old manor and numerous outbuildings of a working wine farm – itself an iconic label – the hotel is five-star luxury smothered in Cape charm and steeped in local history.
The manor’s preserved heritage of mixed owners and dappled usage is immediately evident upon entering the beautiful gabled main house: art deco chequered marble peeks through Persian rugs and yellowwood balustrades lead up to reed ceilings beneath traditional Cape Dutch thatch. And the spaces are crammed with antiques and ancient garage sale finds.
En suite rooms – just 48 of them – feature individual decor with depth, sophistication and charm in equal parts. With plenty of space and views of the award-winning sculpted gardens or vineyards from your private terrace and all the facilities of a stately suite, even the standard rooms will suffice.
Food is, of course, a major feature at Lanzerac and with three restaurants featuring season-specific menus – hearty and rich or light and refreshing – choice may be the only obstacle. The Governor’s Hall – lined with grim-faced portraits – is the signature mess tent with high beams, luxurious seating and pin-striped waiters. The terrace is an oak-shaded al fresco neighbour to the Hall and the courtyard has a relaxed Mediterranean accent. Food descriptions run onto two lines and the 90-odd wines each have their own short story.
