Village at Spier
Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands
- Large rooms, suites and villas opening onto private courtyards and pools
- Food and wine bonanzas with restaurants, bars, and a massive tasting cellar
- Golf course, picturesque lake, cheetah and eagle sanctuaries, horse trails…
Don’t be put off by the bus-sized parking spaces filled with buses – they’re packed with camera-toting pensioners from Florida or Hamburg on a whistle-stop tour of the winelands who don’t really have enough time to bother you.
And the Village at Spier is far, far away from all that anyway. Divided into six double-storey blocks of rooms, suites and villas each built around a courtyard and private pool, the atmosphere is of a quiet country village with a rather decadent life-support system next door.
Keeping you fed, the estate has three restaurants – one a down-to-earth international offering, one a traditional Cape Malay buffet-style option and the other a no-holds-barred African extravaganza – and a deli offering pre-packed gourmet picnic baskets by the dozen.
Keeping you refreshed, the estate produces its own wine and has a cellar representing over 200 local wineries with daily tastings and a cheeky credit card machine. If wine’s not your bag, Totos provides a vibrant and casual alternative with normal drinks and tasty light meals under a canopy of oak.
Keeping you entertained, the estate has a Matkovitch championship course, a Camelot Spa, cheetah and eagle sanctuaries, a lake surrounded by some lush picnic lawn, horse rides and nature trails, and a summer festival calendar packed with music, food and wine.
All this in the spectacular setting on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, surrounded by vineyards and the Helderberg Mountains – perhaps you could overlook those tour buses just this once.
