Protea Devon Valley
Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands
- Simple, comfortable hotel with plenty of country charm
- Spectacular views across Devon Valley to the Helderberg Mountains
- Oak-shaded terrace you’ll want to take home with you
The Protea Hotel Devon Valley bows in subservience to its fabulous location and quietly goes about the business of providing a comfortable, convenient and really rather relaxing place to stay in the heart of the Stellenbosch winelands.
Devon Valley is a braided patchwork of vineyards framed by the jagged blue Helderberg Mountains and carved up by the ambling Shepherd’s Creek River, or Veldwachtersrivier if you can get your tongue round the vernacular, which joins up with the First River, or Eersterivier, come on, you can do it.
The cedar exterior is camouflaged with age-old oaks and deep shaded terraces overlook the marvellous valley. Rooms are comfortable and equipped with standard happy-hotel cons – opt for the cellar rooms, which may sound like musty dungeons but have high ceilings, cosy fireplaces and fish-eye views of the valley.
Dining is a showcase for the food and wine of the region in the re-vamped Flavours restaurant; the Cedarwood lounge/bar - featuring quicksand leather couches and a vast array of single malts – opens onto the Vineyard Terrace, which, shaded by ancient oaks and cooled by the distant ocean breeze, is one hell of a place to absorb the valley view while munching on a light salad and sloshing a crisp cool Chardonnay.
The hotel has two pools and a Petanque court with vineyard walks and numerous excellent wine farms in the immediate vicinity; and all that the Stellenbosch area has to offer just minutes away in a motorised vehicle.
