Dare we say that the Protea Hotel Stellenbosch is a practical option? Well it is. Safe and secluded within the hallowed bounds of a science and technology park, ingeniously named Techno Park, it is close to golf courses, wine farms and of course Stellenbosch itself.
Now, doesn’t that sound practical to you? Of the 176 rooms spread-eagled in two-tiered blocks and bounded by ponds and parks, you will either have a view of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg Mountains or False Bay and Table Mountain in the distance.
There is ample parking and enough of those standard in-room facilities including en suite bathrooms, tea and coffee stations, touch-dial phones and state-of-the-art security to make the Protea Stellenbosch a convenient lock-up-and-forget winelands base camp.
Of course, you may well be here on business in which case – lucky you – or you may want to hang around the hotel for reasons of your own; in that case there’s a decent restaurant, Aristata, that turns into an a la carte fairy at night; the resident’s bar overlooks the vineyards and golf course and the Black Bull Action Bar offers a taste of butch South Africa but not much action.
The pool is large enough to do lengths in should you get the itch and it looks over the splendid vineyards and their ubiquitous misty blue mountain backdrops; 24-hour reception and porters will tend to your urgent needs but you’ll need to stock up on treats unless you can do without room service for a few days.
