River Manor
Stellenbosch, Cape Winelands
- Warm welcome in a charming guest house on a tree-lined avenue
- Minutes from the historic, café-lined quarter of Stellenbosch
- Gingko Spa, gardens with pools and lounges with fireplaces
If you want a place with character and hospitality with genuine warmth, then the River Manor will do the trick. Housed in adjoining listed national monuments, the guest house is a delightful combination of historic charm and modern comfort in an oak-line avenue that follows the course of the Eerste River (First River).
Decor is an obvious colonial elegance slash contemporary comfort with antique furniture, leather trunks and elaborate floral patterns and matching colours. The 16 en suite rooms have been tastefully plumped up and they have the basic amenities plus extra touches like port and sherry trays and bath robes.
Breakfast is included in the fare and you have a choice of healthy or decadent. The guest house is a few minutes’ walk to the historic heart of Stellenbosch with its sidewalk cafés, galleries and many fine restaurants – your hosts, Johan and Leigh will give you the low down on everything from shoe shining to diamond shopping.
With two pools, two cosy lounges with fireplaces and the traditional wrap-around stoep (verandah) offering plenty of deep shade there’s enough post-gallivant, post-treatment, lounging space provided you make time for it.
The Gingko Spa is a feature of River Manor with an almost endless list of treatments from a range of fields and several professional therapists always on hand to deliver the goods. Rooms vary so if you’re particular about showers and baths, be sure to mention this as some have one or the other.

Stellenbosch is to South Africa what Bordeaux is to France and Tuscany to Italy, only with fewer tourists and reasonable prices. |
