Blaauwbosch
Kleinpoort, Garden Route
- Five-star luxury in a private game reserve
- Excellent game viewing including the big five and many others
- Enormous suites with private balconies and mountain views
Only the most seasoned charades fanatic could act out Blaauwbosch: two syllables, first sounds like ‘loud’ without the ‘d’ at the end and with ‘b’ at the front. Second syllable sounds like ‘bourse’ but with a ‘sh’ at the end. And it means ‘Blue bush’. Lesson ends.
While the private reserves up north may be more famous, Blaauwbosch – all together now – has a few tricks up its sleeve: no malaria and a maximum of 14 guests in the park, which is stocked with all the wildlife you’ve ever heard of – and plenty that you haven’t.
Among the rare and interesting flora and between fascinating bird stops, you might see lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, rhino, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and a variety of large and small antelope on your twice-daily game drives. You can also go on walking safaris tracking cheetah, and if lady luck is smiling on you, witness the fastest land animal at work.
The lodge itself is a sturdy buttress against the pesky encroachment of the African bush – and all its savage beasties – with a sympathetic feel for the stupendous setting. Rooms are separate air-conditioned chalets with walk-in dressing rooms and enormous bathrooms; your private view will take in the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape.
Food is another didactic extravaganza befitting this five-star lodge with some well-known standards thrown in for the less adventurous eater. Expect excellent South African wines paired with each dish to perfection.

Blaauwbosch is about an hour’s drive inland from Port Elizabeth on the R75 towards Graaff-Reinet in the north-west. |

Gentle undulations, enormous skies and sparse vegetation make the Karoo an ideal game viewing destination. It’s also remote, silent and rather spectacular. |
