Hermanus
Better known for its land-based whale-watching than for its scenic loveliness, Hermanus is a charming seaside town with plenty of tourism savvy.
While the beasts are pretty awesome, and Hermanusites will be quick to tell you that here is the best land-based whale-watching experience in the world, there is much more to see and enjoy than a gazillion tonnes of blubber and barnacles yodelling for its loved one.
Mile upon mile of coastline with beaches, coves, cliffs and sheer mountains stretch out from the town in both directions. The bay is a natural amphitheatre with the Overberg Mountains, covered in unique Cape flora, being the cheap seats and the wine farms on the other side serve as a rather large post-show refreshment tent.
Whale-fever hits the town every September and lasts through to November; the monsters also come to Hermanus in May but sightings are less frequent and crowds smaller. The town has a crier who honks a kelp horn to alert bleary-eyed revellers to the whereabouts of the whales.
Mild climate, spectacular scenery and of course plenty of touristy things to see and do make Hermanus an attractive destination. Romantics love it; nature-lovers adore it and so do the whales.
The Out2Africa consultants love the Garden Route, it's spectacular why wouldn't they! So they will happily book you a tailormade Garden Route itinerary, simply contact Out2Africa to book.
