With a private strip of beach and a pool that is almost in the sea, Birkenhead House offers complete luxury in a spectacular setting overlooking Voelklip Beach in Hermanus.
Rising from the craggy rocks of the cliff, Birkenhead bears more than a passing resemblance to the Parthenon. Classic columns and floor-to-ceiling French doors open into a courtyard with Doric dimensions and a cascading pool running its length.
The 11 rooms have been furnished with elaborate chandeliers, European antique furniture and marble flooring; the bathrooms are luxurious sanctuaries with twin vanities, sunken baths and plate-sized shower roses. Each room has a fully stocked mini bar, home entertainment centre, Molton Brown toiletries and Ralph Lauren linen.
You don’t pay for a cup of coffee at home nor do you have to sign for your eggs benedict in the morning; so at Birkenhead, everything barring imported drinks, is included in your fare and the quality of the food and service is excellent.
