Hog Hollow
Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route
- Nature and modern comforts join forces
- Comfortable suites with local character and plenty of privacy
- Table d’hôte dinners
Hog Hollow is an eco-chic lodge etched into the crags of the coastal forest like a ripe truffle.
Attaining organic sophistication – a contradiction in terms you may well say – the main house features a cavernous dining hall with high thatch and dark matter floors barely reflecting the panorama of blue skies and steep hills smothered with reclaimed forest.
The pool, sun decks and lounges branch off the main house with cosy clefts and precipitous views through the trees across the valley to the Tsitsikamma Mountains. Rooms are modern cottages tucked into the forest and linked by a root system of pathways.
With elegant luxury, bright colours and earthy décor, the rooms exude romance and comfort. The fireplace, music system and mini bar may help – as will the hot water bottle in winter – but the setting is all you really need.
Dinner is a table d’hôte extravaganza with a medieval twist; you won’t exactly throw your bones over your shoulder but, urged on by Andy and the randomly elected king, the mood will inevitably lean towards boisterousness.
Gathering no moss, the staff members – ushered in from the local community and trained in-house – offer their personal service at the slightest hint of an opportunity. Your car will be washed and they’ll make arrangements for your day’s activities with such enthusiasm you may think they’re trying to get rid of you.

Hog Hollow grows on the side of a steep valley cut by the Matjies River; a winding gravel road 18km east of Plettenberg Bay will bring you to the main house peeping out from behind the trees. |

Forests, rivers, lakes, mountains, beaches, nature reserves – that’s why they called it the Garden Route. |
