Check out the big boys
The western coast of the Garden Route is a shag-fest for whales from August to November and they return in May to deliver their fruit; meanwhile elephants do their business all year round in the wildlife reserves to the east.
Slip into something a little more revealing
Route 62 has a string of hot springs and mineral spas to heal the heart and sooth the soul; massage and general pampering are rife along the scenic route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
Get your tackle out
When in Rome… The folk along the Garden Route and its extended surrounds are mad on the outdoors; walking trails and nature reserves are central features of almost every stop.
Raise your pulse
Ranging from sedate to suicidal, the Garden Route offers every conceivable from of adventure. If a gentle paddle down a bird-strewn river is too tame, try the world’s highest bungy jump instead.
Get romantic
Oysters and champagne; long beach walks; kinky forest trails; luxurious guest houses; languid lunches; cosy dinners; lapping lagoons and tranquil rivers. Everything you need for a dreamy romp to remember.
Work up some steam
The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe is an old steam train that huffs and puffs its way through forests, along rivers and over lakes. It’s pronounced OAT-en-eek-wa Choo Choo if you must know.
Visit the enchanted realm
The Tsitsikamma Forest is the Garden Route’s own garden. With deep ravines and ancient trees, misty mountains and a thick coat of green, the endless forest will woo your senses and lift your spirits. |
