Riempie Estate Hotel
Oudtshoorn, Route 62
- Quiet, relaxing retreat on the outskirts of Oudtshoorn
- Individual en suite chalets comfortably appointed
- Convenient base for exploring the region
Protea Hotel Riempie Estate is a resort-like hotel with a quasi-African theme; dark thatch and reed sit on bright whitewashed walls and the green lawn fills the gaps.
The 40 rooms are individual chalets with thatch roofs, African artefacts and liberal use of brown. Each has air conditioning, tea and coffee, TV with local channels, an en suite bathroom with either a bath or a shower and a hairdryer.
The main lodge serves buffet breakfasts and dinners with meaty South African specialities heading the bill; the ‘Ladies Bar’ – an inexplicable time-honoured tradition - is another African-themed cocoon with a welcome fire in winter and offering a wide range of local wines and imported whiskies.
The saltwater pool is large and twinkles with invitation on those blazing Karoo days; loungers and waiters will take care of your flagging energy.
The estate is just out of town and close to the myriad attractions that Oudtshoorn and the surrounding area has to offer making it a comfortable, casual, uncluttered base for a couple of good nights’ sleep after a couple of good days’ exploration. For a more intimate and attentive option, the estate’s refined cousin, Rosenhof Country House, is just around the corner.
