Kruger National Park
Picture this: you’ve dreamed of visiting a particular country since you thought you were straight and now your dream is about to come true. The catch? You’ve only got four nights there. Where to begin?
With a footprint the size of Wales, the greater Kruger Park area is one of the world’s most famous wildlife reserves and a rather daunting place to visit. That is unless you follow our handy guide and let us give you the best advice based on years and years of making peoples’ dreams come true for four nights at a time – and we’re talking about wildlife not wild life.
Established in 1898 the park has expanded to incorporate neighbouring private reserves – themselves an expanding collection of reserves. Expansion allows animals to follow their ancient migration patterns and eases the burden on the ecosystems.
For most of the animals a fence is as foreign as a toothbrush - although they’ve seen enough Land Rovers to tell if the timing is off and by how much.
The private concessions that ride the Kruger like a billion-dollar barnacle offer the best game viewing inside the park – their use of the concession is exclusive and you get the benefit of the park’s meticulous conservation practices.
Rules are not as strict in the private reserves and you can follow game off road and go on walking safaris. The private reserves we cover are: Manyeleti; Sabi Sand; Thornybush; and Timbavati.
When planning an itinerary, the highlands adjacent to the Kruger are often overlooked - and with good reason if you’ve only got four nights. But if you’ve got the time, a trip to the mountainous realm surrounding the Kruger is a worthwhile – and welcome – stopover en route to the scorching heat of the low-lying Kruger.
