Shishangeni Lodge
Shishangeni, Kruger Park Concessions
- Large lodge with spacious rooms and a casual atmosphere
- Swimming pool, exercise gym, wine cellar and a curio shop
- Private concession within the Kruger Park
If you find the intimacy of an exclusive lodge a little too cloying, then Shishangeni Lodge will be more your kind of scene.
Your ranger – you may fall in love, be warned - is your host and he will join you for dinner and a drink or two but after that you’re left to your own devices. While the local staff members offer charm and warmth, you can come and go as you please, surfacing for a game drive here or a dip in the pool there, and sauntering in for lunch whenever you want.
The 22 rooms are enormous brick and thatch constructions divided into two snake-like wings. Each room has a large free-standing bath, outdoor shower, separate toilet, sitting area, dressing room, mini bar and double-sided fireplace – fancy a fire-lit bath overlooking the bush?
The main house is a double-volume thatch, timber and brick monstrosity in the shape of a shield with a wooden deck running its length. Comprising a sitting area with a fireplace, a small bar and the large dining area, the room – and indeed the rest of the lodge - is a bizarre African art deco concoction that will keep you guessing.
Game drives are offered twice a day in custom-made 4x4 vehicles that are in radio contact with the other vehicles at the lodge – so if they see something, you’ll know about it soon enough. Don’t miss the walking safaris and night drives.
Shishangeni Lodge is in a 15,000 hectare private concession in the south-eastern corner of the Kruger Park. Without fences the concession offers the same pristine wilderness that the Kruger Park has nurtured and benefits from exclusive use by its three lodges. You won’t be sharing your view of the leopard in the tree with thirty other vehicles.
