Camp Shawu
Shishangeni, Kruger Park Concessions
- Small lodge overlooking a waterhole
- Experience the African bush on a walking safari
- Private concession within the Kruger Park
Life at Camp Shawu revolves around its large dam. A deck, with a convenient plunge pool, extends to the water’s edge and loungers, umbrellas and handy waiters are all you need – animals parade past like a Disney set en route to a circus; the resident hippos provide canned laughter and make obscene noises at inopportune moments.
The camp has five separate rooms with thatched roofs and the buffalo dung walls and contemporary east African artefacts make a stylish presentation. The rooms have ceiling fans, viewing decks with Morris chairs, mini bars, fireplaces, free-standing baths and outside showers.
Camp Shawu offers close communion with nature and the emphasis is on walking safaris – the fun, fascinating and sometimes terrifying way of experiencing the African bush and all its creatures and plants. Game drives are also offered in custom-made 4x4 vehicles that are in radio contact with the other vehicles at the lodge – so if they see something, you’ll know about it soon enough.
The camp is a satellite to the hotel-like Shishangeni Lodge in a 15,000 hectare private concession in the south-eastern corner of the Kruger Park. Without fences the concession offers the same pristine wilderness that the Kruger Park has nurtured and benefits from exclusive use by its three lodges. You won’t be sharing your view of the leopard in the tree with thirty other vehicles.
