Kruger Surrounds
People like to add the word ‘country’ when they talk of the mountainous areas surrounding the Kruger Park. You have trout country, forest country, pioneer country, mountain country, panorama country, up-country and, if you’re really in the know, pancake country.
This scenic land of towering mountains and sweeping valleys falls under the shadow of the low-lying Kruger Park to the east; people either slow down and go ‘Oooh’ and ‘Aaah’ as they drive through, or they bypass it altogether in rabid pursuit of the ‘big five’.
While you may indeed need a break from the dust, heat and scraggly bushveld – and a break you will get – there is a lot to see and do in this area that will make you forget about that lion picking its teeth with an impala horn just three hours away.
The scenery is mostly windswept mountains dotted with solitary shrubs and valleys thick with juicy vegetation; babbling trout-filled brooks trickle down towards great rivers and at every turn there’s a sign pointing to some Scottish-sounding waterfall or nature reserve.
Every drive is a scenic one as mist shrouds the forested mountains and the air is heavy with pine sap; valley vistas stretch far into the distance and further down than you’d care to know.
