Blue Mountain Lodge
Hazyview, Kruger Park Surrounds
- Charming décor in a range of styles and epochs
- Fabulous food produced from home-grown ingredients
- Hiking, biking, birding or being completely useless are all possible
The name and location should hint at the style - Blue Mountain Lodge, on the outskirts of Hazyview, is a five-star hotel with an eclectic mix of room types and styles. And villas that would make Oprah weep.
The Manor suites comprise two complete villas each with two suites that are stuffed with antiques only a dealer would appreciate and the personal chef and maitre d’ only add to the extreme luxury.
Each building on the property houses several themed rooms and the variety should cover all tastes. For Provencal charm the Quadrant duplex suites open into cobbled courtyard and look out towards the forested hills; the Victorian suites are at the foot of the main hotel and the Ballantyne Suite is a presidential palace in a Regency outfit.
Dining is also a bit of a feature here and Elvis is famous for more than just burgers. The table d’hôte menu takes locally produced ingredients and turns them into French classics. Peppered ostrich fillet is grilled and served with an almond risotto and sweet jus and pears are poached in red wine and served with vanilla ice cream.
The hotel sits in 200 hectares of forest, orchard and indigenous bush making for a number of in-house activities including wonderful walking trails, bird-watching and, for those that indulged a little too much over dinner, mountain biking. The mountainous region offers plenty of attractions and the hotel offers a range of wildlife activities with the Kruger Park being a short drive away.

The Mpumalanga area surrounding the Kruger Park is a mountainous realm of tranquillity; rivers plop through lush thickets and the mist swirls like a wispy ballet dancer. |
