Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge
Nelshoogte, Kruger Park Surrounds
- Game farm with spectacular escarpment views
- Luxurious rooms, excellent food and wonderful service
- Gentle country pursuits from fishing to horse riding and walking trails
Dawsons Game and Trout Lodge is a discerning traveller’s retreat into an elegant world unflustered by the trivialities of common life.
With just eight suites, each the very definition of luxury, the lodge offers intimate charm in a spectacular setting – poised at the head of the massive escarpment at the end of the Great Rift Valley that plummets a thousand metres into the lowveld of the Kruger National Park.
The rooms speak of a Victorian era with free-standing baths, walk-in closets and antique furniture and if the décor isn’t warm and welcoming enough the heated towel rails, complimentary sherry and log fire surely will be.
Take your meals in your room, on the patio, in the restaurant, in the boma or in some isolated romantic place of your choice with a pre-packed picnic basket. Wherever. The food is excellent and the wine list is long.
Activities are what this lodge is all about and here you can go bass and trout fishing – tuition for the uninitiated; bird watching with an experienced guide; hikes and walks; horse riding; game viewing – plane herds, wildebeest, a tame giraffe and more; and scenic drives to all the region’s attractions – don’t forget your picnic basket.
Three hours from Joburg and one and a half from the Kruger Park, Dawsons Lodge is a convenient, comfortable and rather dignified port of call that will break up the tiresome journey and offer plenty of light relief in the process.

The Mpumalanga area surrounding the Kruger Park is a mountainous realm of tranquillity; rivers plop through lush thickets and the mist swirls like a wispy ballet dancer. |
