Critchley Hackle
Dullstroom, Kruger Park Surrounds
- Picturesque and romantic lakeside cottage-style rooms
- Warm welcome, friendly and efficient service
- Convenient highlands location in Dullstroom
Scotland is the only place where you can get away with colours like salmon pink, cherry red, lavender wash and British Racing Green in a combination of floral and gingham. Critchley Hackle, in the Scottish derivative town of Dullstroom, makes a bold attempt and almost gets away with it.
Stone cottages, a placid lake and an English garden evoke the Highlands theme; the interior’s antiques, fine art and ready-weathered furniture drive the point home.
The rooms are cosy havens with log fireplaces, en suite bathrooms and private patios overlooking the lake and gardens; the suites have two en suite rooms, mini bars, private garden and lake-facing patios.
The restaurant is a dazzling spread of Scottishness but the food, thankfully, is not. The setting is idyllic with twinkling starlight reflecting off the lake and the food is fine country fare paired with some excellent South African wine.
For lazy days in, Critchley Hackle offers trout fishing in the lake, a cosy library, a fabulous pool deck overlooking the lake and horse riding nearby.
Dullstroom has a high concentration of restaurants and cafés and the area is rife with delicious views and tally-ho country pursuits with a South African twist – usually a high dose of adrenalin.
