The Coach House
Agatha, Kruger Park Surrounds
- Gracious farm-style hotel with splendid views
- Excellent restaurant and enormous cellar
- Wellness spa that features a range of treatments and facilities
The Coach House is a country hotel on a large working farm processing such delights as nougat, coffee, mineral water and nuts under the Cheviot brand name.
The manor house décor extends to the 41 rooms, which have been comfortably fitted and feature large en suite bathrooms and private balconies overlooking the mountains. Suites and premier rooms have fireplaces, so unless you have a arsonphobia, these are the rooms to book.
The restaurant offers table d’hôte and á la carte menus and ingredients are naturally fresh and locally produced – try the trout or beef if you want to test this theory. The wine cellar has over 8,000 bottles representing more than 200 local and international wineries.
The Agatha Spa is a destination wellness centre with an array of facilities and treatments guaranteed to repair and restore frayed nerves. The gym, heated hydro-jet pool, steam room, sauna and range of treatments are staggering – you’ll want to check in for another week.
Activities on the estate include biking, hiking, bird watching and the adjacent forest reserves offer more of the same; beyond the estate the region is rich in natural and cultural heritage. Visit the Modjadji Cycad Forest – home to the world’s highest concentration of these ancients – and hear about the Rain Queen on a guided tour of the local villages.
The Kruger Park and its private Concessions are a short drive away making this country hotel and spa an ideal stopover en route from Joburg.

The area surrounding the Kruger Park is a mountainous realm of tranquillity; rivers plop through lush thickets and the mist swirls like a wispy ballet dancer. |
