Hippo Hollow
Hazyview, Kruger Park Surrounds
- Relaxed and casual hotel on the Sabie River
- Comfortable rooms with all the standard amenities
- Excellent restaurant and bar overlooking the river
Hippo Hollow Country Estate is a thatch and timber lodge on the banks of the Sabie River in the lowveld of Mpumalanga. Set in a beautiful sub-tropical garden with landscaped features and two large swimming pools, the air is warm, the atmosphere relaxing and the setting takes some beating.
With a choice of en-suite rooms, garden chalets or suites along the river, all accommodation is comfortable and well appointed. Décor is the tried and tested ‘Out of Africa’ chic with dark browns, white linen and local artwork padding the walls.
The restaurant and bar overlook the river and the warmth of the cellar-style décor will put you in the mood for a hearty country meal and a burly bottle of South African wine.
The shaded pools with loungers and umbrellas dotted about the place will occupy much of your time during the lowveld heat of day and you can buy Aunt Molly her present from the curio shop.
Nearby activities – talk to your friendly concierge – include game drives, golf, river rafting, fishing, hiking and scenic helicopter rides over the Blyde River Canyon.
The Kruger Park and its Private Concessions are a half-hour drive away and the region has some must-sees of its own including the canyon, numerous waterfalls, heritage trails and a range of blood-quickening adrenalin activities.

The lowveld is the quintessential Africa – rolling savannah planes, dense thickets and hazy mountains in the distance. Up the escarpment you’ll find rivers, waterfalls and mist. |
