Manyeleti Reserve
Returning land to its former inhabitants is always going to be stickier than a toffee pot in a steam room. But the Mnisi People of the Bushbuck Ridge area successfully laid claim to some land and promptly decided to do nothing.
Thanks to this decision the Manyeleti Game Reserve, established in 1966, was saved. The reserve covers 22,750ha of African bush and shares a fenceless border with the Kruger National Park in the east; the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve in the north; and Sabi Sands Game Reserve in the south.
With freely roaming game, the area has become home to the fabled ‘magnificent seven’ – lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, rhino and buffalo. And the drought-prone weather cycle means better visibility and waterholes that are often a multi-species symposium.
The reserve is quasi-National Park and some sections adhere to the public restrictions while others follow the path of private reserves, which allows for responsible off-road tracking of animals and vehicles that are more open to the elements.
Game, birds, reptiles, trees, plants, insects – the whole shebang is to be found within the reserve and, with a variety of lodges offering different styles and levels of luxury, the Manyeleti Game Reserve has a future that is as bright and enduring as the stars after which it has been named.
