Ngala Game Lodge
Timbavati, Greater Kruger Park
- Large, comfortable lodge on the banks of a dry riverbed
- Comfortable chalets with a gracious living area overlooking a waterhole
- Track down the ‘magnificent seven’ and explore the African bush on foot
Ngala Private Game Reserve has a 14,500 hectare footprint within the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve and sharing a border with the Kruger National Park. There are two lodges on this reserve, one tented and exclusive, the other thatched and luxurious.
Ngala Main Lodge on the banks of the dry Mopane River is family-friendly (the breeding kind) lodge with 20 enormous thatched chalets and one suite that’s worth pawning your grandmother for. The chalets have an en suite bath, shower, twin vanities and a private verandah. If you want your own plunge pool, separate living area and a personal safari vehicle and ranger, go for the suite.
The living area comprises a bar, lounge and intimate courtyard where candle-lit dinners are served; the boma is the traditional open-air eating place. The pool, shaded by the riverine trees, overlooks the waterhole frequented by huge herds of elephant among many other animals.
The vast unspoilt expanse of African bush is home to many of the continent’s big stars and an enormous cast of supporting actors. Large elephant herds move in and out at their will and there is an unusually high concentration of leopards and lions; cheetah and wild dog favour this area for its large expanse of open planes and buffalo munch their way slowly to and fro.
Your ranger will take you on two game drives each day – one at frogs croak and the other at a more civilised mid-afternoon – and with their experienced trackers and knowledge of the bush you will seek out those exalted beasts. Mid-morning bushwalks are not to be missed for an intimate encounter with the African bush.
