Akeru
Timbavati, Greater Kruger Park
- Relaxed, casual lodge offering a classic safari experience
- Comfortable chalets, intimate atmosphere and friendly staff
- Track down the ‘magnificent seven’ and explore the African bush on foot
In an age of deluxe lodges with silver service waiters reeling off a menu that bears little relation to the English language, Akeru Safari Lodge is a refreshing stalwart of the traditional African safari.
Small, privately owned and managed, the lodge offers a warm welcome, friendly and helpful staff, comfortable rooms and a fascinating wilderness adventure that is yours to keep forever.
The seven thatched chalets vary in size – some even take families, would you believe – and each has been carefully decorated and fitted with comfortable beds, useful furniture and luxurious bathrooms.
The main house is a homely collection of furniture and artefacts under a cool thatch roof overlooking the pool and waterhole; a loft deck extends over the trees for prime views and the lounge and bar are warmed by a log fire. Dine indoors, on the deck or in the traditional boma – you’ll be able to pronounce most of the dishes and will enjoy all of it.
Game-viewing in the African wilderness of the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve – with its fascinating plants, trees and complex ecosystem – is the focal point of life at Akeru. Your morning and evening game drives, at the hands of your chatty and accommodating ranger will seek out the ‘magnificent seven’ for which the reserve is famous and a host of equally fascinating animals.
Mid-morning guided walks will introduce you to the extraordinary world of the African bush: trees that could stock your toiletry bag and insects, birds and reptiles that could save your life – or take it. Now that’s useful information.
