Victoria Falls
On its own, as a world heritage site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, Victoria Falls is a superlative-defying experience that will uplift you and remain a humbling and mystical memory long after you leave the ‘Smoke-that-Thunders’ behind.
But the good folk who inhabit the region went and accessorised, and now it is an action-packed adventure resort with sunset cruises, game drives, scenic flights and fine dining rubbing shoulders with white-water rafting, gorge swinging and elephant-back trails.
This may sound like Disneyworld’s version of Niagara but it’s not. It’s Africa. The static heat buzzes in your ear like a power line; the air is so thick with earthy savannah and mopane trees you can taste it, and all around you the African bush lies wild and impenetrable much like the first explorers encountered it centuries ago.
And then you have these waterfalls: viewed from the opposing cliff with a flimsy railing between you and certain death, a mile-high plume of spray soaks you and nourishes the ancient rainforest; a permanent thunder fills the air and birds flit through rainbows while your companions mouth inaudible statements of awe, wonder and little significance.
On the Zimbabwean side is Victoria Falls town – home to some splendid hotels and lodges and the Victoria Falls National Park; on the Zambian side of the falls is the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park and, a short drive upstream, the town of Livingstone - erstwhile trading post and Zambian capital now with a burgeoning tourism industry thanks to the bad press created by the neighbouring president.
At Out2Africa we would love nothing better than to send you on the safari holiday of a lifetime so simply contact Out2Africa to book your special tailormade itinerary, companions not included but welcome!
