For romance: a perfect 10. Of course there are many details that deserve a mention but Tongabezi is an evocative and romantic riverside lodge first and foremost. The fact that it is on the Zambezi, in a wildlife area, and close to Victoria Falls is neither here nor there.
The rooms are palatial thatched suites on the water’s edge with no front walls, sunken baths overlooking the river and gigantic beds swathed in mosquito nets that make your standard four-poster look like a baby’s cot.
Using local stone, grass and wood, the main lodge and rooms embody the beauty of the surrounds and decor has been lavishly used to display the rich heritage of the local people and the diversity of colours and moods that make up an African day.
Dine in the privacy of your own river-facing deck, while your private valet scurries back and forth at your service, or join the select crowd in the main lodge with all-inclusive meals, drinks, teas and coffees plus laundry and nearby excursions. Exciting activities included are a visit to the falls, game viewing, river cruises and island visits, cultural tours and an inside look at the school funded by the Tongabezi Trust – so you know your money’s being put to good use.
Wooing should be no problem here, with romantic island dinners, personal valets, and private excursions to Livingstone Island on the precipice of the falls. And in case it’s all too much to handle, you can always request a private spa treatment in the privacy of your room.
