Sussi and Chuma
Livingstone, Zambia
- Natural style and elegance with five-star service
- Exclusive tree-houses with private views and luxurious fittings
- Inside the game park with daily visits from elephant and hippo
Though many attempts have been made, few have succeeded in creating an African theme without falling back on the hackneyed colonial grandeur of yesteryear. Sussi Lodge succeeds.
Shaggy thatch and hobbledy-hoy paving give way to hefty hardwood furniture, textured walls and earthy fabrics with natural patterns and the whole wooden structure blends into the African bush like a silent game tracker.
While the lodge fits its surroundings like water in a bucket, the luxury on offer couldn’t be further removed from the indiscriminate balance of nature. Here the scales are more than a little in your favour despite the fact that elephants amble through the camp to drink and hippos waddle out of the water to eat beneath your tree-house at night.
Each of the 10 luxurious rooms is built into the canopy of an enormous ebony tree allowing the wildlife free reign while providing you with a roosting bird’s-eye view of the Zambezi slipping silently past.
Dining in the main lodge is an open-air, fire-lit experience and the pool leads down through lush greenery to the water’s edge. The nearby Chuma villa is a double-roomed dream complete with personal chef and private boat, vehicle and guide for endless game-viewing and sunset cruises.
Meals and drinks are included as are a guided tour of the falls, game drives in the park, a cultural tour of the area and river cruises to start or end your day. In addition to all that, Mercy - a qualified and experienced masseuse offering soul-dripping treatments in the sala by the pool deck is ever at your mercy.
