When developers in southern Africa are stuck for a theme, the big suits shout, ‘COLONIAL GRANDEUR!’ and send their scouts to the Victoria Falls Hotel to make notes. The reason is simple: the Vic Falls Hotel is colonial grandeur.
The hotel first opened its doors to visitors in 1904 and, barring minor technological innovations like satellite TV and the internet, very little has changed over the past hundred years. And that’s not to say the hotel hasn’t kept pace with today’s demands – why early in 2006, they relaxed their evening dress code from black tie to smart casual.
The stately, dignified presence lends itself to the rooms, which are decorated in Edwardian style with subtle antique pieces and sumptuous four-poster beds. In-room facilities offer the gamut of standards plus mini bars, bathrobes and your own umbrella.
That umbrella may sound an oddity, but it’s for your visits to the falls – take it, no matter how foolish you feel on the way there under a clear blue sky with brilliant sunshine. The 10-minute walk to the falls is by way of a private path that skirts the adjacent Victoria Falls National Park.
Facilities extend from floodlit tennis to silver service dinner-dances and personal spa treatments; the highlight for many is the staggering afternoon tea – a timeless tradition that may well outlive this internet fad.
