Itinerary
Day 1: Cape Town
This tour starts at 8.30am with a visit to District Six and the Guga S’Thebe Arts & Culture Centre in Langa.
A traditional healer will reverse your receding hairline and you can try some African beer – think alco-porridge – at a shebeen, which is a traditionally outlawed township drinking house.
Visit the Gugulethu Seven Memorial and the Amy Biehl Memorial in Gugulethu and then drive through Nyanga and Crossroads townships towards Khayelitsha – South Africa’s oldest township.
At Khayelitsha you will visit a guest house and get to chat to the locals who adore the attention and beam with pride at the acknowledgement of their success against all odds. In the afternoon, if you’ve got the strength, take the optional visit to Robben Island Museum – former prison and scene of incarceration for many black political activists including Nelson Mandela.
The trip includes a ferry ride to the island and a guided tour by a former inmate; birds and seals have colonised the island and its fascinating history makes it well worth the visit.
