The "Musts" to Pack for Gorilla Trekking

Before setting out on your unique escapade into the rainforests, you'll need to do a bit of planning to ensure you're comfortable, safe and having a ball of a time every step of the way. Side note: some luxury lodges do provide some of the gear, but we'll let you know about all that when we start planning your trip!

1. Sturdy and Comfortable Footwear

Gorilla trekking involves traversing rugged terrain and navigating through lush vegetation. Therefore, it's crucial to have quality hiking boots that provide ample support to your feet and ankles.

Opt for a good pair of waterproof boots that'll protect you from both the rainforest's muddy trails and the occasional encounters with rain. Try to walk your boots in before the trip to avoid uncomfortable blisters.

2. Light and Durable Clothing

Beyond looking fabulous, it's important to strike a balance between comfort and practicality, so lightweight and breathable clothing is the key. Pack long-sleeved tops and bottoms to protect your skin from the thick forest branches.

Choose waterproof materials that dry quickly for the humidity and the sweat you'll work up during the trek. And a rain jacket or poncho will help shield you from unexpected downpours. So, think, layers!

3. Gaiters and Gloves

Although it's not exactly a runway look, we recommend packing gaiters, which are sleeves for over your boots that keep unwanted dust, debris and moisture from reaching your socks. Additionally, you won't regret packing gardening gloves for when you need to climb up and down the steep slopes – we're only looking out for your fresh mani, honey!

4. Binoculars and Camera

You won't want to miss a moment of witnessing these majestic primates in their natural habitat. So bring your binoculars and camera, plus extra batteries and memory cards, to capture stunning photographs (that you can brag about over brunch). Just make sure your flash is off so you don't disturb the wildlife.

5. Insect Repellent

To save yourself from swatting away the pesky bugs all day, tell them to "sashay away" by using a reliable insect repellent and reapplying it during your trekking experience.

6. Sunglasses, Sunscreen and a Hat

The sun can still harm your skin even under the rainforest canopy and cloudy sky. So, bring a well-fitted, good quality pair of sunglasses to keep your eyes from straining and a wide-brimmed hat to keep your face, neck and ears covered from the sun. Additionally, remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF regularly.

7. Backpack

A reliable backpack is vital for carrying all your trekking essentials. Look for a lightweight, waterproof backpack that is spacious enough to hold your camera, water bottle, snacks, sunscreen and any extra goods you'll need. Ask your Travel Expert if your lodge of choice also provides you with a backpack.

8. Other Necessities

Most importantly, you'll need to buy a permit to go gorilla trekking, which can cost between USD 700-1,500. These funds go directly to protecting these endangered primates and their home. But don't worry, we'll take care of all of this admin when you're booking through us.
