One Africa, Two Very Different Travelers. How We Do It.

How to build one African holiday around a couple who want different things and still want to experience them together

The 04:45 alarm goes off and your partner is upright like a meerkat at sunrise. You mutter “ugh” into the pillow. This is the one you chose willingly, right? “Fine, I consent, but only if you call Vusi for a strong flat white. Gosh, I love Camissa House.” Vusi is one of the house’s butlers and, at this hour, the most important man in Cape Town. You get up because this matters to him, and because seeing him delighted is part of your holiday too.

Tomorrow, he agrees to the long lunch without checking the time. Fair is fair.

Four nights in Cape Town: take turns choosing the day

He chooses the mountain before breakfast; you choose the rest of the day.

By 07:00, you are both on the mountain: he brings enthusiasm; you scrape through thanks to that flat white Vusi made. By noon, the hiking boots are off and your long lunch has begun. The Atlantic gets you both at sunset.

If he fits in another trail while you visit a gallery, meet afterwards for lunch. Four nights also gives Cape Town’s weather one chance to misbehave without stealing the city from you.

Four nights on safari: the private vehicle is well worth the splurge

Safari is less flexible. Most shared drives leave before breakfast and last about three hours. You, the guide, tracker and fellow guests follow one agreed plan. That can be great fun, but if he wants to stay with the lions and you are ready for coffee, the whole vehicle has a say.

For this trip, we would choose a wildlife-rich private reserve in the Greater Kruger and price a private vehicle from the beginning.

With a private vehicle, the guide can stay with the lions a little longer, stop for coffee when you need one and adjust the drive around the two of you.

It costs more, of course. We would sooner put the budget here than into a higher room category if it gives both of you a better safari.

The lodge has to work when the vehicle leaves

Between drives, that means a late breakfast, a pool worth lingering beside, excellent food and a suite private enough for a real afternoon off.

That leaves us looking for two things: exceptional game viewing and a lodge where the pool, food, design and spa can hold their own between drives.

Londolozi’s Private Granite Suites is a strong recommendation for this route. The three-suite camp overlooks the Sand River, each suite has a private heated pool, and a private vehicle can be reserved at an additional charge for the full stay. The Healing House, recognised by both the World Spa Awards and Oprah Daily, offers treatments between drives.

Dates, budget and availability may change the lodge. The brief stays the same: excellent wildlife and somewhere you both want to return to.

Four nights, fewer negotiations

Now, we are Travel Experts, not your shrink. You join the dawn drive because it matters to him; he orders another coffee because breakfast matters to you. Mutual compromise leads to great holidays.

With four nights, skipping one morning is easy. Join him at dawn the next day and there is still time for a civilised breakfast afterwards. No summit meeting required.

Four nights on Benguerra Island: end with the Indian Ocean

At &Beyond Benguerra Island, sail in a traditional dhow, snorkel the reef or explore the island in the morning; return to your private pool, the beach or the spa after lunch. Then there is the castaway picnic: lunch on a secluded stretch of sand and nowhere else to be that afternoon.

Four nights later, shoes have become optional and the alarm clock has been forgiven.

The flights have to serve the idea

Flights between Cape Town, the Greater Kruger and Vilanculos vary by day, season and lodge airstrip. Depending on the route, the safari-to-beach connection may run through Mbombela or Johannesburg. Benguerra is then reached by a short helicopter transfer from Vilanculos.

We build around the actual operating days, transfer times and luggage rules. If the route looks elegant on a map but costs you a day in airports, it is not elegant.

One trip, built for both of you

Most of it is shared: the mountain, the first elephant, the coffee stop, the helicopter over the water and the moment shoes stop mattering. He gets the alarm; you get the coffee. The rest belongs to both of you.
